Why do people tend to base a whole group of people off one person in said group?

For example, I know of several people whose entire opinion of the LGBT community is based on that one video by Chris Crocker.

I mean, seriously, that guy is a freaking p*ssy.|||Chris Crocker is no more representative of the gay community than Hugh Hefner is representative of the strait community.

No one can say that "you are reflective of the company you keep" unless you actually spend time with said company.|||Because people are stupid.

People want to say all blacks steal because one black stole a car several yrs ago

People want to say all whites are racist because of the history they have with blacks, native americans, jews etc

People want to say all mexicans work for 2 dollars a hour just because they see a few standing in front of home depot

people want to say just because perez hilton and cris crocker are flamboyant gay guys they assume all gay guys act like that.

Stereotypes are a part of society.|||cause people are ignorant. they can't help it, but that doesn't mean it's excusable. like pedophilia, hey, let's see if we can't get them to executed too. lol|||For many people who have seen Chris Crocker's overly exploited videos - that might have been their first time seeing/listening to someone who is gay (or that they knew were gay). It'd be like me not knowing any Indian people then seeing Apu on the Simpson's and thinking...gee... is that what they are really like...they all work at a corner store selling chutney squishes and talk with an over-the-top accent (as if every person in one race could all act the same...not!). And secondly, have you ever watched any of Chris Crocker's other videos, like his serious ones? That guy is actually really intelligent and has some great views on LGBT issues and current events. Of course he has his over-the-top videos but doesn't everyone on YouTube?|||ignorance and stupidity mainly

plus for many it fits their agenda if they can stereotype with lies
